Here is a step-by-step guide to help you service a boiler:

Servicing a Main Eco Compact Boiler is a very essential task which will help ensure its efficient and safe operation. This step-by-step guide is made for a qualified gas engineer, as a homeowner you are required to call a gas-safe registered engineer as you are unable to proceed to take these steps.

Step 1: Have your tools ready

For a service, you will need certain tools to carry this out. This will include a screwdriver set, adjustables, cleaning brushes, a flue analyser, a multimeter, a combustion analyser, a vacuum cleaner and other recommended tools.

Step 2: Turn off the power

Make sure you locate the power switch to the boiler and turn it off. This will make sure the boiler is safe to work on to carry out the service.

Step 3: Allow the boiler to cool down

Before you start servicing the boiler, allow the boiler to cool down to prevent you from getting any burns.

Step 4: Inspect the boiler

As you take the casing off to the boiler, visually inspect the boiler for any signs of damage, leaks or corrosion. Check the flue, pipework and connections also. Look out for any obstructions and blockages that may affect the boiler’s performance.

Step 5: Clean the combustion chamber

You can use a brush and a vacuum cleaner to clean away any debris, soot or residue that has accumulated. Make sure that the burner is clean and free from any blockages otherwise, this will ruin the boiler.

Step 6: Check and clean the burner and electrodes

As you inspect the burner and electrodes for any signs of damage or wear. If necessary, make sure you clean them up using a soft brush to remove the carbon deposits or debris.

Step 7: Inspect and clean the heat exchanger:

So the heat exchanger is a crucial component of the boiler. Carefully examine the heat exchanger for any signs of damage or corrosion. Make sure you clean the heat exchanger with a brush or vacuum cleaner, ensuring that all the surfaces are free from dirt and debris.

Step 8: Check and clean the flue

As you are inspecting the flue for any blockages, corrosion and damage, make sure you clear any obstructions that might hinder the proper flow of the combustion gases.

Step 9: Check the gas:

Make sure you run a gas test and make sure the boiler is giving off the correct readings and that there is no leaks within the property.

Step 10: Clean the condense trap

This is an important one, if you don’t clean this out, over time it will fill up and end up blocking the boiler and damaging it. Pull the trap out and run it under a tap and shake it until all the dirt is out of the trap and is all clean.

Step 11: Test the boiler safety features

Double-check that the safety features, such as the pressure relief valve and the flue gas safety devices are functioning correctly. Test the pressure relief valve to ensure it opens and closes correctly.

Step 12: Check the boiler controls

You can test the boiler controls, including the thermostat, timers, and safety controls, to make sure they are all working properly. Check that the boiler responds appropriately to adjustments and commands.

Step 13: Analyse flue gas emissions

With your flue gas analyser, use it to measure and analyse the flue gas emissions. This will help you access the combustion efficiency and ensure that the boiler is operating properly. If you are wondering what the readings should be either check out our video below or have a look in the manual. If the readings are too high it could be very dangerous so you will have to turn the boiler off for the future until it gets resolved.

Step 14: Reassemble the boiler:

Once you have completed all of your servicing tasks, make sure you reassemble any components you removed and secure them properly. Always put the casing back on the boiler as well.

Step 15: Turn on the power

Turn the power back on to the boiler, make sure the boiler turns on without any problems and that everything is functioning properly.

Step 16: Document the service:

Maintain a record of the service you have just carried out, normally there is somewhere in the back of the manual a service sheet to fill out. This helps keep the boiler in warranty and you are able to check on the boiler’s performance each year.

Regular servicing will help your boiler’s performance massively, you normally service a boiler once every year. We suggest getting your boiler serviced, for many reasons like boiler performance and the longevity of how long your boiler will last. If you need to know anything more about servicing, there will be everything about it in the boiler’s manual.
