A Step-by-Step Guide to Installing the Worcester Greenstar Si Compact Combi Boiler (For gas safe engineers only)

Are you ready to upgrade your home heating system? Installing a Worcester Greenstar Si Compact Combi Boiler can be a game-changer for your comfort and energy efficiency. In this blog, we’ll guide you through the process of installing this popular boiler model, ensuring a smooth and successful installation. So, let’s get started on your journey to a warm and cosy home!

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Gather the Necessary Tools and Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have all the tools and materials required for the installation. Here’s a handy checklist:

  • Worcester Greenstar Si Compact Combi Boiler
  • Flue kit
  • Condensate discharge pipe
  • Copper pipes and fittings
  • Screwdriver
  • Adjustable spanner
  • Pipe cutter
  • Spirit level
  • Wall plugs and screws
  • Sealing tape
  • Electrical tester

Step 2: Choose an Ideal Location

Selecting the right location for your boiler is crucial. Look for a wall close to an external vent or flue outlet. Ensure there is enough space for the boiler and easy access for servicing. Ideally, it should be installed in a well-ventilated area, away from combustible materials. If you are taking a boiler out and it was in a good spot, then go ahead and put the new boiler in the same place if the location is suitable.

Step 3: Make sure you have drained down and turned everything off.

Once you are happy with the chosen location, now it’s time to drain the water from the system, so you will want to find the mains stop tap within the property and turn it off and open all the taps within the house. Then you will want to find a radiator with a valve where you can attach a hose pipe to, connect it and then open the valve for it to drain down. Next, you will want to find the gas mains and run a test to see if there is a leak within the house before you start fitting your combi boiler. Once you have done that and everything is fine, the last thing to do is turn the electrics off to the boiler.

Step 4: Remove old boiler/ Mount the new boiler.

Once you’ve chosen the perfect location and have ripped the old boiler off the wall, it’s time to mount the boiler. Use a spirit level to ensure it’s perfectly horizontal. Fix the wall-mounting plate securely using the appropriate wall plugs and screws. Make sure the plate is level and sturdy enough to support the weight of the boiler. Once you have installed the wall plate to the wall and think it is secure enough to hang the boiler on, then hang the boiler carefully.

Step 5: Connect the Pipes and Fittings

Carefully connect the copper pipes to the boiler. Start with the flow and return connections, ensuring they are correctly aligned and tight. Use a pipe cutter to cut the pipes to the desired length, and then use suitable fittings to connect them securely. Pay attention to the manufacturer’s instructions for the correct installation of the pipes.

Step 6: Install the Flue Kit

Now, it’s time to install the flue kit. The flue is responsible for removing waste gases from the boiler. Follow the provided instructions to attach the flue to the boiler and ensure it is positioned correctly. Use sealing tape to create a watertight seal between the flue components. Make sure you screw any screw in the flue which are required otherwise it can be dangerous.

Step 7: Connect the Condensate Discharge Pipe

The condensate discharge pipe removes the condensation produced by the boiler. Connect the discharge pipe to the condensate outlet, ensuring a proper downward slope for water drainage. If needed, insulate the pipe to prevent freezing during colder months.

Step 8: Electrical Connections

Take extra care when connecting the electrical components. Before starting, make sure the power is switched off at the main circuit breaker. Follow the wiring diagram provided by Worcester to connect the power supply and controls correctly. Once everything is connected, use an electrical tester to ensure there are no faults or loose connections.

Step 9: Fill and Test the Boiler

With the installation complete, it’s time to fill the system with water. Connect the filling loop to the boiler and slowly open the filling valves, allowing water to enter the system until the pressure reaches the recommended level. Before you do any of that, make sure all joints are soldered and all tightened correctly to ensure no leaks. Remember to tall all the taps off within the house and you run a gas test!

Step 10: Boiler Commissioning

After the installation, it’s important to commission the boiler properly. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure optimal performance. This may involve adjusting settings, flushing the system, and ensuring all safety features are working correctly.

Step 11: Fill the booklet out.

Make sure to fill the booklet out for the homeowner or if you fitted it for yourself so you can get the warranty for the boiler. This booklet needs to be signed off with all the boxes filled out with all the readings of the boiler.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully installed your Worcester Greenstar Si Compact Combi Boiler.
